The GHL

What is the GHL?...
Short answer - it stands for Genesis Hockey League, a co-ed non-contact hockey league aimed at adults who have had little or no childhood hockey experience. The league is also known in the region by the moniker as 'Hockey for Dummies'. However, that is only the beginning...

The GHL Niagara currently has 12 teams, over 150 players, GMs, captains, coaches, referees, scorekeepers, and one amazing atmosphere.

Dummie [duhm-ee] - noun, plural -mies, adjective, verb, -mied, mying
Hockey for dummies is successful because of its players. A level playing field is created among the athletes and non-athletes once the skates are put on. Dummies genuinely care for each other and a community is quickly formed. It is great to see two players from different teams helping each other get up after a mild fall to the ice and chering when someone from the opposite team scores their first goal. If you are familiar with 'Timbit' hockey, you can consider the GHL as Timbit hockey for adults - Donut Hockey.

But you claim that you can't skate? Good. You are the reason this league was formed. We provide an exciting environment where you can learn how to skate (somewhat) and the game of hockey without being intimidated.

How it works...
First you take the plunge and join. You register online and then pay your registration fees. Next you are off to summer camp where you will be introduced to the rules of dummie hockey. At summer camp, team GMs will scout the lack of talent and consider who they want to draft to their team.

The draft...
This is conducted just like a professional draft - actually better! You and your guests will enjoy a barbeque lunch and be entertained as you wait anxiously to be drafted to a team.  Be sure to arrive early and schmooze with the GMs of your favourite team. This is usually
the best way to get drafted early.

The regular season...
During the regular season, coaches, referees, GMs, and more experienced players all assist the new players in
improving their game; but mostly everyone on the bench is making plans for how many wings they will order at the local restaurant sponsor.

You can be traded, but do not fear, we only trade to balance teams and after the trade-deadline there is no more trading. Some players have even requested trades as part of the professional experience. After all, this is as close to professional hockey that you will ever get! And sure enough, after about 12 weeks it really starts to look like hockey - slow hockey, but hockey!

The Allstar Game...
This is a once and a life-time experience where players of the GHL play at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton. A great time is had by all on the ice and off. After our games, all of us stay at Copps to watch the Hamilton Bulldogs play. Everyone is invited to participate but spots are limited. First-pay first-play.

The playoffs...
Your heart will race, you will sweat like crazy, you will not be able to wipe the smile off your face, and you won't have even played a game yet. The best in playoff atmosphere EVER!! Ask any experienced  dummie about our playoffs!

After the season...
The Awards Gala - It's the Academy Awards of hockey. GHL players walk the red carpet dressed to nines. You will not recognize most of them! This event is filled with anticipation and surprises. You definitely want to get tickets to this one early!
