1st Period - Scouting the League Questions
2nd Period - Pre-Season Questions
3rd Period - Game On Questions

What if I have never been on skates before?

Perfect - That's why the league started...for people to have a second chance at playing hockey!

Am I too good to play in your league?

You could be - hence the try-ins. Please let us take a peek at your skillset and go from there.

Understand - that if you are a competitive person, this is not the league for you. This is a laid back environment for fun and over competitive attitudes are not welcomed. If you cannot handle losing (even if it is every game), do not join our league... we want people who enjoy sports but can keep a level-head.

What are the age limits?

18 - 99. We have some people that are 18 and we have some people that are in their 60s.

Why do I need to try in?

To make sure you are as bad at hockey as we hope you are. Also, the GMs want to see the new talent (or lack there of) to see who will fit into their team rosters. We also want to introduce you to some of the basic rules before game time. It is important that we see what level of hockey you are capable of playing at so that you may be slotted in the correct division. Only brand new players to our league are required to try-in. Please bring your own jersey and socks to the try-in.

What if I cannot make the try-ins?

It is very important that you are the try-ins, however we realize that summer is a busy time for people. The league will evaluate which level you should be playing at based on your experience with skating and hockey itself. If you were placed at the wrong level, we can move you as needs be.

What happens at the draft?

Draft Day is an annual event where all the current and  new GHL players are invited to attend a barbeque. Players are drafted to teams where they have their picture taken in their new jersey with the team management. Free-agent signings and trades often happen at this event. The entire family is invited and as a star player your meal is complimentary. This event has been tied to charitable organizations in the past.

So, get the family, and have a great time at the annual Draft Day BBQ.

What if I cannot make it to the draft?

You will miss out on an awesome day, but no worries, you will still get placed on a team and be notified  via e-mail. You will pick up your jersey and socks at your first game. (top)

Can I play on the same team as my friends?

If Phoebe, Rachel, Ross, Chandler, Joey, and Monica all joined, there would be no guarantee that they would be on the same team (we would become a much more popular league I am sure!). However, plead your case at the tryins and the Draft Barbeque to the various team GMs. Just remember you have signed up for the full GHL experience. You can be traded etc. at any time.

Can I play on the same team as my spouse?

Yes. Due to childcare issues and because we believe it is a fun activity for spouses to participate in together, we do accomodate for them. If it is obvious that the two are required to be in different divisions we will not be able to accomodate. However, you will both be placed on teams that almost always play back to back for your convenience.

Where do we play?

MCU & Centennial Arena Complex in Virgil during the Winter and the St. Catharines 4 pad in the Summer. Arena Maps

What equipment do I need?

The two most important pieces of equipment you will need are your helmet and skates.

These items we recommend you purchase new, and properly fitted to you. Cheap skates often seem to offer proper support in a store, but they usually have cardboard supports in the ankle. Once you sweat in your skate, the moisture weakens the cardboard and both your ankles and skating suffer greatly.

A helmet is your best friend on the ice but if it is not properly fitted, been abused, used too much or not CSA approved, it can be more dangerous than having no helmet. Be sure to have a professional size you up and properly fit you!

Here is your list: (approximate prices for entry level equipment)
  • hockey skates ($100-300)
  • shin pads ($30)
  • jock or jill ($30)
  • pants ($60)
  • shoulder pads ($40)
  • elbow pads ($25)
  • gloves ($50)
  • neckguard ($15)
  • CSA approved helmet with full face shield or cage($50)
  • stick ($25 +)

(for tryins only you will need a hockey socks and jersey)

Do I get to keep my Jersey and Socks?

No, you will have to return your jersey and socks the last game of the season. If the jersey was not cared for with normal wear and tear, you may be told to return it and pay us the $85.00 for a replacement. The fee will NOT be added onto the following year's registration, it will be collected that night or billed to via Paypal.

What if I forget a piece of equipment?

If you forget a piece of equipment you better beg, borrow, or steal (do not steal) the piece as you will not be allowed to enter the ice area without it. Neckguards are the most often forgotten item. If you step on the ice without a piece of equipment it is a two minute penalty that begins once you get the missing item. If it takes you ten minutes to get it, that is 12 minutes of lost game time.

It is a tough rule, but it is for your own safety.

Do I get to keep the puck if I score my first goal?

Tell the refs you want the puck right away, afterall you do not want someone else scoring their first goal with your puck! They will bring it to the time-keepers booth and exchange it. After the game, you may go to the time keepers booth to claim your puck. NOTE: The GHL has the right to keep any puck for the GHL Hockey Hall of Fame (yes there is really a GHL Hockey Hall of Fame).

Can I refuse a trade?

Trades are only done to create parity in the league and to add entertainment value to the fans, players, and the GMs. All trades will be agreed upon with GMs, Director of Operations as well as the players involved.

What if I am going to miss a few games?

Be sure to let your GM and/or coach know. You can find their email address under contacts if you do not already have it.

In the minor division, a player of equal caliber will be called from another team in the same division to cover your spot.

In the pro division, a player will be called up from the same franchise only to cover your spot.

Failure to let them know, will cause confusion come game time. It is okay to miss games, but please be a team player and let the GM and/or coach know.

Can I get a refund?

A refund may be given if a player fails the try-ins by being too good. Any player deemed too good for our league will be cut and given a full refund at try-ins. However, if a player sneaks past try-ins and is later deemed too good, the player will be given a pro-rated refund.

If a player is dismissed from the league for rule violations or voluntarily leaves the league, no refund will be given.

If you suffer a season-ending injury or become pregnant during the season  you will be offered a pro-rated CREDIT upon your return.
